Selkies (Celtic Mythology) literally shed their seal forms like a snake, assuming a human form beneath. The only way to return to the sea is by doning their shed seal skin.
Luce Leon (Upon a Starlit Tide). Like selkies and merrows, seamaids require an enchanted object, in their case a sheath of seasilk, to change between human and mermaid form. If it is lost or stolen, the seamaid is trapped in one form until it is retrieved.
